After librarian Lulu Smith is accused by a patron of having spring fever, she spends her life savings on a cruise to Havana, where she begins an affair with politically ambitious lawyer Bob Grover. Lulu tries to talk him out of admitting the truth and ruining his career, but when she can't seem to succeed, she proposes to Al in the hope that it will make Bob forget about her. However, on the night Bob was elected, Al told her that he knew everything about her, Bob, and Roberta, and Lulu killed him to stop him from publishing the story. A year later, as Bob was dying, he was visited by Lulu, whom he had pardoned after a short prison sentence.
