Children's TV. They claimed that because the show was financed by game show producers Merrill Heatter and Bob Quigley ("Hollywood Squares"), it would appeal to children's interest in the show. Bet on the outcome of each of the 34 games. (Nonsense. I went up/down on how many times Dick Dastardly's device backfired on him.)Despite Hanna-Barbera's atypical use of repetition Animation and low-budget action, "Wacky Racers" was still an unusual piece of fun cartooning that later spawned shows like "Bailey's Comet," "Raff Olympia" and "Yogi Space Race." Although many other racers also shine, much of the humor stems from dastardly intrigue. In the Golden Key comics, Penelope Pitstop conveniently got Peter Perfect and Red Max to fight for her, thus eliminating them. It's not used in the show even though it should be. It is dotted with great lines. When the narrator calls Dastardly "the Dracula of drag shows," Dastardly retorts: "I hate that!" Narrator: "But you deny it?" Despicable: "No, I'm just disgusted!" It's a comedy cartoon, but it doesn't forget that it's a comedy cartoon, which is something a lot of cartoons from the 70s and 80s forget. A little bit of trivia, Despicable did cross the finish line twice, but was disqualified both times. For the first time, he sticks out the Mean Machine's nose before anyone else does (however in another episode, Rufus Lovecart physically sticks his neck out to reach the finish line, and the judges give him the winning number). The second time, a chain reaction collision resulted in Dastardly and Muttley being ejected onto the leading Arkansas Chuggabug. The following year, Despicable also set a precedent - becoming the first (and, as far as anyone knows, only) villain to have his own show, Despicable and Muttley in Their Flying Machine.
